Conservation

Conserving and reusing water are important to sustaining our fresh water supplies. By using and reusing water wisely, we can reduce the demand for freshwater, extend our existing drinking water supplies and protect the environment.

As part of this commitment to the environment, the St. Johns River Water Management District and Coquina Coast project partners work in concert on numerous water conservation strategies and programs to effectively and efficiently save water. These programs include:

  • Faucet aerator and showerhead retrofit incentives
  • Indoor audits and leak detection
  • Irrigation system audits
  • Landscape ordinances
  • Rate structures that promote conservation
  • Florida Water StarSM certification
  • Submetering retrofit incentives
  • Low-flow toilet retrofit incentives
  • Outdoor irrigation restrictions
  • Reclaimed water use for irrigation
  • Public awareness campaigns

Studies of supply and demand indicate that even with conservation and reuse, the Coquina Coast project participants will eventually need alternative water supplies to protect groundwater resources and meet future drinking water needs. However, the more water we save today, the less new water we’ll need in the future.
